Tommy RandA - General manager

When did you join ChangeKitchen CIC and what did you do then?

I joined ChangeKitchen full time in February 2018, after having done some exciting external catering events with them during my studies at the University of Birmingham where I read Politics. Out of that, I was set on working with a social enterprise, but it has been a happy accident to fall in love with catering.

What do you do now?

I manage our brilliant and diverse staff team, take care of lots of exciting event planning, and generally ensure the smooth running of all things ChangeKitchen! In saying that, I love to be involved in the kitchen and to deliver events when there is the chance.

What’s the highlight of your day at ChangeKitchen CIC?

Definitely seeing a plan come together. When all of the hard work pays off and we put on an exciting event with our delicious food as the main attraction!

What makes you smile at work?

The personal journey and growth that many of our team go on during their time at ChangeKitchen is incredible and inspiring, and that together with seeing the kitchen environment thriving with us all working together is what makes me smile each day.

How do you think ChangeKitchen CIC makes a difference to the local community?

I love that I get to see the difference we make every day, in our kitchen, at our café, and at events that we deliver – it has always been a guiding principle for us to serve the local community. I am particularly proud of our work with survivors of modern slavery, as well as the many work experience placements and volunteering placements that help give local people a chance to get back into education, training, or work – it is so rewarding to see their confidence and skills blossom while they are with us.

What’s your proudest moment at ChangeKitchen CIC?

It is really hard to pick just one. We have together put on some incredible events over the years. I was very proud recently that my best friends chose ChangeKitchen to cater for their incredible wedding – I cannot think of a higher honour or praise of our food!

What’s would/is be your ‘random act of kindness’?

In my personal life, I enjoy supporting a number of causes close to my heart. As a random act, I really enjoy walking, and am often finding myself offering directions (hopefully helpful ones!) to tourists or those new to the city who are a bit lost. I like to think I’m doing a small bit to represent us as the friendly city we are known for being.

What do you do to relax?

Walking, as mentioned, as well as visiting local parks and museums. I grew up in Oxfordshire, taking holidays across the UK when we could, and so it’s lovely to get out to the country when I can. I also love going to lots of music gigs, and playing video games – particularly with great stories or puzzles, where I can get lost exploring.
